Polycaudal Cats | Fun Facts And Science Behind It

Cats with more than two tails are called polycaudal Cats. Are polycaudal cats real? What is their genetics? If you want to know about them in detail, keep reading this article.

Polycaudal refers to cats with three or more tails, while bicaudal refers to cats with two tails. Cat owners knew that polydactyl cats have extra digits, hence the name “polycaudal” stuck. Numerous tails on cats have been the topic of literature in Japan, the United States, and the United Kingdom. There has been a growing trend of producing so-called “novelty breeds” by significantly modifying an animal’s look, and this has doctors and breeders worried.

Are Polycaudal Cats Real?

Polycaudal phenotype is caused by unknown genes. Experiment breeding has mostly been done with related cats or cats that aren’t related but share the same feature so far. Only two of their progeny (out of a total of eighteen) have double tails. For one thing, it’s unusual to see kittens born to cats with a single tail.

Polycaudial Cat Defect:

Even though having two tails isn’t always a bad thing, superstitious people may worry about it. Scientists found that most cats could move their tails together, but each tail could only move at the same time. So, a cat can’t move both of its tails in the same direction at the same time. In this case, the two can’t go together. Most of the cats that were looked at did something called “tail dominance,” which means that they preferred to wag their tail with only one side of their body. The dominant tail was typically larger and had better muscular development than the subordinate tail because the subordinate tail did not atrophy. In this case, the secondary tail atrophy was not significant until early in life, necessitating early amputation.

Differences Between Different Kinds Of Polycaudal Cats:

In the most recent occurrence, the shorter lower tail prevented the patient from using the bathroom. The upper tail, however, remained longer and more prominent. This last instance was very noteworthy, but it was left out of the polycaudal study data since it might have been a coincidence or the result of a mutation or birth anomaly unrelated to genes.

Splits in a mouse’s tail can be identified as either a V at the base, a Y in the middle, or a T at the end. Incomplete bifurcation leads to thicker, flatter, and less flexible tails, all of which increase the likelihood of developing arthritis. Mice typically have V-shaped or Y-shaped tails.

Many cat owners believe having a cat with two or more ears to be a major flaw in the breed. Although polydactyly is rather frequent, it has only been witnessed a couple of times in the wild. Although the short-legged mutation has been documented in several geographical locations, no examples of self-sustaining colonies of short-legged cats can be found in the scientific literature.

The figure has been modified in an inappropriate way, despite its place in Japanese culture. The Manx is a great illustration of a trait that is tolerated because of its historical significance. Since this can result in back pain, it is unacceptable if it has happened recently.

Genetics Of Polycaudal Cats

Polycaudality is caused by genes that haven’t been fully understood yet. Most of the time, cats that are related to each other or cats that are not related but share a trait have been bred together in experiments.

Only two of their eighteen offspring have more than one tail since only cats with one tail have mated. This is due to the shorter tails of one-tailed cats. The absence of the polycaudal feature in mono-caudal cats from known pedigrees lends credence to the theory that this is an incompletely recessive trait. This proves that a recessive gene, which only manifests with or without additional genes, is responsible for the polycaudal phenotype.

Polycaudal Cat And Genes:

When the kittens are old enough, they will be bred to make another group of 18 kittens. If the gene follows the standard Mendelian (single gene autosomal) pattern, all F1 kittens with the polycaudal trait will be heterozygous. However, there will be polycaudal kittens in the F2 generation.

No one knows for sure if the gene could kill people. We will use the number of kittens born to polycaudal cats or polycaudal carriers that have been bred to figure out these numbers. It was found that the mutated gene was expressed differently in mice with the mutation. It’s possible that cats have the same problem and that genes that change how things work are to blame.

Polycaudal refers to cats with more than two tails. Bicaudal refers to cats that have two sets of tails. In part, because cat lovers already recognized that polydactyl cats have more than two toes, the term “polycaudal” persisted. Polycaudal characteristics are caused by unknown genes. To study the transmission of the mutation, all known polycaudal cats have either had their genes altered or are part of a scientific breeding program. None of them have been made available for general adoption.
